CODumentary Documents Rise Of Activision's Call of Duty Franchise

by Matt Helgeson on Aug 08, 2014 at 12:00 PM

A new independently produced feature documentary tells the tale of Call of Duty's origins and rise to international popularity.

Entitled CODumentary: The Call of Duty Story, the film aims to document the rise of Activision and Infinity Ward's popular first-person shooter franchise, and the eSports scene that has sprung up around its competitive multiplayer.

"CODumentary has been made for [Call of Duty], and gaming fans everywhere in the world. I just felt it was important to make a film about such a great game and how it's just got bigger and stronger. There is also a strong moral side to the narrative and we portray the whole picture from the early days right up to 2014," says producer Jonathan Beales.

In the trailer, you'll see shots of live Call of Duty competitions, as well as commentary from various eSports personalities and pro gamers like OpTic's Matt "NaDesHoT" Haag.

Our Take:
It's great to see documentarians start to embrace gaming. However, my one concern about the film - based on the trailer - is that is seems to have no input from anyone from Activision or Infinity Ward, with the exception of someone who runs the Call of Duty Endowment charity. Can a film really sum up a game without talking to the people who made it? We'll have to wait to see if there's more in the film than is reflected in the trailer.
