Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes On PS4 Outsold Xbox One Version Three To One

The Metal Gear Solid series has been associated with the PlayStation brand since Solid Snake first set foot on Shadow Moses in 1998. Even though the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, was multiplatform, it appears that new-gen players preferred to experience the game on Sony's PlayStation 4.

According to Konami's fiscal report for the quarter ending June 30, 2014, the game sold three times as many copies on the PS4 than it did on Xbox One. The information was revealed in a unit sales breakdown, which you can see here. The chart doesn't break down sales on a per-game basis, but considering that Ground Zeroes is the only game that Konami has released on the new-gen systems, it's easy to extrapolate that detail. According to the data, PS4 sales accounted for 12 percent of unit sales during the quarter, while the Xbox One brought in 4 percent. All told, Konami reports that it sold 570,000 copies of Metal Gear games in the quarter, compared to the 190,000 units that were sold during the same period last year.

As a whole, the PlayStation brand continues to drive most of Konami's console-game sales, with the PS3 and PS4 accounting for a combined 54 percent. Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One account for 12 percent, and the Wii brought in 2 percent. The company hasn't released any software for the Wii U.

Our Take
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is coming out sometime in 2015, and it should be interesting to see if PlayStation players remain loyal to the platform. There's always the possibility that Xbox One players are holding out for a full-length release instead of the tease that Ground Zeroes provides.
