Curse Of Naxxramas Week Two Was The Biggest Yet For Hearthstone

by Mike Futter on Aug 05, 2014 at 11:09 AM

Blizzard revealed that last week was a milestone for free-to-play collectible card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. According to company president Mike Morhaime, the Curse of Naxxramas has been important for the title.

Last week, the second of five weekly content expansions was released to players on PC, Mac, and iPad. According to Morhaime, it was the strongest week yet in terms of revenue and engagement.

Morhaime also pointed out that the title is yet to arrive on Android devices and iPhone. When Hearthstone arrived on iPad, it triggered millions of new Battle.net accounts. There is an expectation that new mobile platforms will evidence additional spikes similar in magnitude.

Our Take
While we don’t yet know exactly how profitable Hearthstone is, it’s surely been a solid performer. A small team, smart monetization hook, and a pedigree tied to Blizzard’s powerful MMO have all served Hearthstone well. There’s a reason so many people are drawn back to it time and again.
