Dead Island Movie Back On Track With New Partner

Deep Silver has joined forces with new partner Occupant Entertainment to create a movie based on the Dead Island franchise.

Lions Gate Entertainment purchased the rights to make and distribute a Dead Island film back in 2011, but changes in Lions Gate management forced the project to stall and the rights to revert back to Dead Island publisher Deep Silver. With the rights back in Deep Silver's hands, it sought out a new partner and landed on Occupant Entertainment, a production company that helmed the 2006 indie-slasher, All The Boys Love Mandy Lane.

Originally, the Lions Gate Dead Island film was going to be based around the game's impressive reverse zombie outbreak trailer, but the new direction for the film could go in any direction. Deep Silver and Occupant Entertainment have not revealed any specifics about what the film will be about, who will star, or who will direct, but it is fast-tracked for a 2015 release with hopes to premiere at Berlin or Cannes.

Our Take
The Dead Island games are fun, but I am not sure how rich any of their narratives are for film adaptation. Is there anything in particular to set a Dead Island film apart from other zombie films? We've seen zombie horror, comedy, drama, and romance films. What will a Dead Island movie do that has not already been done?
