Reader Discussion: Do You Buy Remastered Games?

by Ben Reeves on Jul 28, 2014 at 11:02 AM

The beginning of a new console generation is the perfect time for developers to re-release their last product again on new consoles. How tempted are you to buy those remastered releases, especially if you've already played the original.

Earlier this year, Eidos released Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. I loved the original 2013 release, and this updated version looked like a great excuse to play a game I loved one more time. However, I never got around to actually playing the game. At the end of the day, I defaulted to playing new experiences over playing Tomb Raider again. Maybe years from now when I want to play Tomb Raider again, I'll return to the Definitive Edition, but I don't see myself playing that game again this year.

This week, I'm again faced with the dilemma of playing the The Last of Us Remastered Edition. Similarly, it's temping, because I want to play that game again, but I might default to playing something new.

What about you? Remastered editions are a great opportunity to play a game again, but how often do you do that if you've already played the original game? Do you ever wait for a remastered edition to play a game? Do you avoid remastered editions?
