Astro Goes Into Beta With Laptop-Friendly USB Audio Transmitter For The A50

by Mike Futter on Jul 23, 2014 at 01:53 PM

Astro has announced a new beta product that will make the A50 Wireless headset easier to use with PCs. The company is entering testing with a USB transmitter that broadcasts Dolby Digital 7.1.

The A50 comes with a full-sized Kleernet 5.8 Ghz transmitter that connects via digital optical port and requires USB power. For those that game on the go, this means using two cables running to the device.

The USB Tx is an all-in-one solution with a small form factor and low power needs. Astro says that the device requires 1/10th the power required to charge the average smart phone.

The device will retail for $50 and may undergo some changes before a final version is released, but those interested in beta testing can order one now for $40. The A50 headset is not included and retails for $299.99.

Our Take
The A50 one of the headsets I use for console gaming, but I’ve shied away from using it with my laptop because of the cabling required. I’m intrigued by the USB transmitter, as it seems to solve the power and space issues inherent with the standard Tx.
