Bungie Reveals What's Up With Destiny's Companion App

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 14, 2014 at 01:49 PM

Bungie has revealed some of the features you'll find in Destiny's free companion app.

Bungie's Chris Gossett showed off the app to IGN, and the companion aims to give players a wealth of info about players' characters, including real-time 3D models of them. Players can also check out 3D models of weapons and armor that they acquire, and equip them through the app, which instantly carries over to the game.

Destiny's companion app also lets you check out your characters' stats, missions, and bounties, as well as the game's extended lore. Gossett says the app works with all console versions of the game, and will be available on iOS, Android, and the web. IGN notes that only the iPhone is being supported for iOS during the beta, but that an iPad version will be available at launch. To see a video of the app in action, check out the IGN link below.

The Destiny beta begins on PlayStation platforms this Thursday, July 17. Xbox gamers will have access on July 23, with everything wrapping up on July 27. The title will release on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 on September 9.

Our Take
I'm not a big fan of second-screen apps – If I'm playing a game, I want to be focused on my actual television screen, and not my phone or tablet. I am a stat junkie, however, and having the plethora of extra info that Bungie tracks available when I'm out of the game is an enticing proposition. It's also free, so I guess I don't have any excuse not to at least check it out.
