Alien: Isolation Pre-Order DLC Will Be Sold Separately Later

by Mike Futter on Jul 11, 2014 at 01:36 AM

On the Internet, everyone can hear you scream. In this case, it was Sega and Creative Assembly doing the listening.

Earlier this week, the duo announced that most of the cast of Ridley Scott’s Alien is reuniting for some special additional content. The news was met with mixed reactions when it was discovered that The Crew Expendable and Last Survivor missions featuring those characters were part of a pre-order bonus.

Late yesterday, Creative Assembly’s community manager offered some words of comfort for those that would prefer to wait for reviews. You will be able to purchase these missions separately at a later date.

It's genuinely been great to see the reaction to The Crew Expendable and Last Survivor pre-order bonus content we announced yesterday and how excited you all are to re-experience those classic scenes from the original movie with our Alien. It's been absolutely amazing for us at the Studio.

However, some of you have been asking if the two pieces of content are only available through pre-order or if we'll be releasing them at a later date as well.

So, I can confirm today that we do plan to release both Crew Expendable and Last Survivor at a later date and we'll have more details for you guys on that shortly.

Best, Nee.

You’ll be able to return to the Nostromo without pre-purchasing your ticket. And for those of you who are interested in Alien: Isolation, but overwhelmed by the flood of October titles (and, specifically, the titanic offerings on October 7), you won’t miss anything by purchasing later.

Alien: Isolation will be out on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 7. For more, check out a recent preview.

Our Take
I understand why people don't like pre-order exclusive content when it expands the gameplay (and, by extension, is more than a gun you won't use for more than the first hour). In this case though, Sega is up against huge competition on October 7 with Dragon Age: Inquisition and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. After the last Alien title (the miserable Colonial Marines), Sega needs a big gun to woo players. The cast of the original Alien? That's a pretty big gun.

This move makes perfect business sense, especially in a crowded October and jam-packed day. You might not like it, but Sega needs to do more than just publish a great game this time out. The competition is just too intense.
