Back in 1992, Super Mario Kart kicked off the mascot racer genre, becoming one of the most beloved series in video games. Today, MOBAs are one of – if not the – most popular genre of games available, so what happens when we mix the two gaming giants together?

Dota Dash, a play on the title of Mario Kart’s GameCube entry Double Dash, is a fan made, free-to-play mod where you race Dota 2's stable of heroes rather than command them in battle. Creator BMD has also repurposed existing Dota items for Mario Kart-style wackiness, including the Greevil shells highlighted in this trailer.

BMD noted that Dota Dash is still very early in development, and plans to continue refining the mod in light of heavy criticism levied against the mod’s stability. He wrote on Reddit that he hopes to include more features into the game, including a traditional Mario Kart circuit-style online mode, as well as some map-editing tools.

Our Take
The recent release of Mario Kart 8 has shown the series is no stranger to unexpected online attention in the form of the Luigi Death Stare, so we hope we hope Dota Dash can deliver on the zaniness in the future. And, if Dota 2's The International tournament can reach a prize pool exceeding $10 million, perhaps competitive Dota Dash might soon take off, too.
