Looking Glass Studios Founder Paul Neurath Announces New Project

by Mike Futter on Jul 01, 2014 at 04:55 AM

Looking Glass Studios might be no more, but its legacy lives on. Thief, Ultima Underworld, and System Shock 2 (which it co-developed with Ken Levine’s Irrational Games) have all left an indelible mark on the industry.

Neurath is now at the helm of a new team, Otherside Entertainment, which has acquired the Underworld property. Underworld Ascension will attempt to recapture the magic of Ultima Underworld’s trek through the Great Stygian Abyss beneath Britannia.

It doesn’t bear the Ultima name (that’s still under wraps at EA). But just as Richard Garriott is nodding to that series with his in-progress Shroud of the Avatar, Neurath will likely do the same with Underworld Ascension.

More details will be coming soon.

Our Take
I’m interested to see what Neurath does, but more details would be helpful. Even some barebones details about the project might give us an idea of the scope and scale Neurath is going for. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to get a Kickstarter announcement in the coming months, and that muffles my enthusiasm.
