The Creator Of Words With Friends Is Making An Oculus Game

by Mike Futter on Jun 04, 2014 at 10:03 AM

Paul Bettner, the creator of Words with Friends, is trying his hand at something new. His company, Playful Corp., has signed a deal with Oculus VR to create a new, Rift-exclusive title.

Lucky’s Tale is a third-person virtual reality platformer. We’ve seen Oculus show off third-person experiences before (Couch Knight and Elemental Defense at GDC).

We haven’t seen a platformer though, but we’ll have our chance at E3 next week. For more on Oculus, you can read our coverage of the Developer Kit 2 and an interview with the company immediately following the Facebook acquisition.

Our Take
Platformers typically involve falling to your death or landing on spikes. Mario, Sonic, Rayman, and other mascots have succumbed to all manner of bodily harm (which is probably part of the reason why Lucky’s Tale isn’t a first-person game). It’s hard to envision what this will look like without screenshots or footage, so we’ll just have to look forward to E3.
