Dragon Quest VIII Comes To Mobile Devices

by Mike Futter on May 29, 2014 at 11:50 AM

Dragon Quest VIII was first released on PlayStation 2 in 2004 (though it took until the next year to arrive in North America). 10 years later, the title is now available wherever you and your phone are.

The control system has been reconfigured to include touch input for movement on the overworld and in battle. Square Enix has released a new trailer to show off the new version of the title.

You can purchase it for iOS or Android. Both versions are priced at $19.99.

Our Take
I'm pragmatic, and I understand that ports take time and money. But I also wonder how many people are going to be interested in a decade-old game for $20. Square Enix has boldly embraced premium pricing, and is pricing their content fairly for the amount of gameplay in the package. The publisher is fighting a culture that sees even a $5 game as "expensive," making its continuing quest to deliver its classics at relatively high prices even gutsier. If the choice is between a $20 price tag and no ports at all, provided they are good ports, I have no problem with the entry fee.
