Watch Dogs Beats Assassin’s Creed III To Top Of Ubisoft Day One Sales Chart

by Mike Futter on May 28, 2014 at 10:46 AM

Ubisoft has high expectations for Watch Dogs, hoping it will sell at least 6.3 million copies (according to a recent earnings call) and establish a new franchise for the publisher. The game's release yesterday shows that Watch Dogs has the strong potential to meet or exceed those expectations.

According to Ubisoft, Watch Dogs has shattered the company’s previous first day sales record which was held by Assassin’s Creed III. That title sold 12.5 million copies in its first five months. Ubisoft announced earlier this month that it has shipped 11 million copies of Assassin’s Creed IV.

Our Take
While first day sales aren’t the sole predictor of lifetime sales, Watch Dogs is off to a great start. We’ll have a better idea when Ubisoft next reports its financials (following the close of its first quarter in June), but it could be on track to break 10 million if it keeps up its pace.
