Report: Nintendo Figurines Will Interact With Super Smash Bros.

by Matt Helgeson on May 22, 2014 at 03:50 PM

In an interview with a French newspaper, a Nintendo executive says that the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will use near-field communications technology to interact with an upcoming line of Nintendo character figurines.

In an interview with Le Figaro, Steven Boyle, managing director of Nintendo France, the executive responds to a question about upcoming Wii U games with this answer [note: answer translated from Google]:

"...And on the output side of games produced by Nintendo, there will obviously be the fighting game Super Smash Bros. E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology [used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real objects - here, figurines - in video games] in Nintendo consoles. The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros."

As you can see, this seems to suggest that the new line of Nintendo game figurines will interact with Super Smash Bros. in some way.

Game Informer has reached out to Nintendo's American PR branch for a confirmation.

Our Take:
Considering that Super Smash Bros. is the game that represents the widest selection of Nintendo universe characters, it makes sense that the company would make it compatible with the new NFC figurines. I'm betting this is true. My only hesitation comes from the fact that, sadly, I do not read or write French so I'm relying on Google Translate.
