PDP Releasing GameCube-Inspired Wii U Controller For Smash Bros.

by Dan Ryckert on May 21, 2014 at 10:19 AM

Many Smash Bros. fans point towards its GameCube entry (Melee) as the peak of the popular fighting series. As such, a good percentage of fans prefer the GameCube controller as their pad of choice. This option was still present with the Wii entry, Brawl, but the Wii U doesn't feature any GameCube controller ports. Peripheral manufacturer PDP saw an opportunity to introduce a new product, so the Wired Fight Pad will be launching this holiday season.

Like the Wii's classic controller, the Wired Fight Pad will plug into the bottom of the Wii remote. It can be used for Wii and Wii U titles, and PDP says it will also be compatible with Virtual Console games. A line of Wired Fight Pads will be released, each featuring the theme of a different Nintendo character.

No image of the new controllers has been made available, but PDP will be launching the Wired Fight Pad for $24.99 this holiday season.

Our Take
Smart move on PDP's part. The Wii remote and nunchuk combination get the job done, and I'm sure GamePad controls will be fine, but nothing compares to the GameCube controller when it comes to Smash Bros.' fast-paced action. I'll certainly be picking one of these up this holiday season.
