John Oliver Tweaks Nintendo Over Gay Equality On New HBO Show

by Matt Helgeson on May 19, 2014 at 07:26 AM

John Oliver, who earned accolades for being Jon Stewart's most able fill-in on The Daily Show, has gone solo with a new HBO program entitled Last Week Tonight. On this week's episode he turns his satiric eye towards the controversy regarding Nintendo's lack of gay relationship options in Tomodachi Life.

It's funny stuff, and with Oliver's trademark biting wit. In addition to giving the audience a "civil union cheat code," he skewered Nintendo's lukewarm response to the issue by saying, "Yes! Virtual...eventual equality...that's the dream."

You can watch the clip below to see some familiar Nintendo icons exploring their sexuality.

Our Take:
I'm a huge fan of Oliver and am really liking the new show. I hope he continues to monitor the world of video games; we have a lot of ridiculousness that needs to be satirized.
