Witcher 3 Developer Questions Validity Of 1080p vs. 720p Debate

CDProjekt's Marcin Iwinski says that the debate over resolution is largely a "PR differentiation."

In an interview with Eurogamer was asked about Witcher 3's PlayStation 4 version versus its Xbox 360 version and said, "The final effect, whether it's 720p, 1080p - we had the debate in the studio about it and actually asked our tech guys to explain how it works, and they sent me some complicated graphs that 'if I have this size of the screen, and I sit one meter or two meters from it, then I might be able to see the difference'."

He went on to say, "It's more of a PR differentiation, which is very important for Sony right now - and they are using it, obviously - than something that is really meaningful to gamers."

However, he did confirm that it's possible that there will be differences between the PS4 and Xbox One version in terms of resolution, and said that the PC version will likely scale higher than either console versions.

Our Take:
Resolution has been a hot-button issue in this new console war, and Sony's PlayStation 4 has definitely shown a more consistent capability to run games at 1080p. Opinions vary on whether these differences are detectable to the human eye on a TV of any reasonable size. One thing to consider is that TVs themselves are not created equal - I see a real difference between the Sony TV I get to use at work versus the Sharp TV I have at home. The Sony has a better, richer display even if it's the same game at the same resolution.
