Ubisoft Isn't Giving Up On Last-Gen Systems Yet

by Mike Futter on May 15, 2014 at 07:21 AM

As you might have noticed in the Far Cry 4 announcement, Ubisoft will release the title on last-generation hardware. That isn’t likely to change any time soon.

“As a company, we expect to continue to support those consoles for the foreseeable future,” said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. He also indicated that Assassin’s Creed will appear on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall.

So far, the publisher has only discussed Assassin’s Creed Unity for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. For more on Ubisoft, you can read up on the company’s difficult year and the delay of The Division.

Our Take
Here’s the reality: if you want big budget games, publishers need the opportunity to sell them. Unfortunately, that means creating games with last-gen versions. The install base isn’t big enough (and won’t be by this fall) to support the sales volume Ubisoft needs for games like Far Cry 4.

Expect last-gen SKUs to appear into next year before they start dwindling. The math of game development requires it.
