Over 11 Million Copies Of Assassin’s Creed Sail The Seas

by Mike Futter on May 15, 2014 at 08:30 AM

Ubisoft shared updated sales statistics for the most recent Assassin’s Creed title. According to its year-end financial report, over 11 million copies of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag have been shipped to retailers.

Assassin’s Creed is now the fourth largest brand by retail sales for the past nine years, trailing only Call of Duty, Mario, and FIFA. The company has also touted the critical reception of Black Flag, which was the top-rated new-gen title of the 2013 holiday season. Unfortunately, it hasn't quite reached the sales of Assassin's Creed III, which had sold 12.5 million at this time last year.

We shared some thoughts about Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, including our love of the sea shanties. You can also read our Afterwords look at the title.

Our Take
Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag was a return to form for the franchise that had stumbled a bit in the two entries immediately prior. Ubisoft is being discreet about its plans for the series on last-gen hardware so far, but rumors indicate that it will be a different game than Assassin’s Creed Unity.

There’s a good chance that fans will buy both titles, if that’s the case. Ubisoft has precedent for releasing multiple Assassin’s Creed titles in a single year, and could capitalize greatly on a loyal fanbase.
