Rockstar Has Shipped 33 Million Grand Theft Auto V Copies

by Mike Futter on May 13, 2014 at 11:43 AM

Rockstar has shipped an additional 4 million copies of Grand Theft Auto V in the past six months. During Take-Two’s earnings call, the company provided updated numbers for 2013’s best selling title.

In October, we reported that 29 million units had been sold to customers in under two months. Comparing the new 33 million shipped data against the 29 million sold number is a bit of a mis-match, but we can easily deduce that things have slowed down.

Thankfully for Take-Two, Rockstar is planning to release something on new-gen systems this year. The company relies heavily on the GTA developer, with this year’s financials heavily buoyed by GTA V.

Our Take
I strongly suspect that there will be a narrow window between the announcement of the likely new-gen GTA V port and its release. Take-Two doesn’t want too long of a lame duck period, and sales of last-gen versions are likely to cool significantly if new-gen versions are announced.
