Gamers Bomb The Country Of Denmark In Minecraft

The Danish Geodata Agency recreated a 1:1 scale model of the entire country of Denmark inside Minecraft. It was an impressive feat of gaming ingenuity...until the bombing started.

A few weeks ago, the Danish government used public data and maps to recreate the entire country of Denmark in Minecraft. The model was fairly impressive, constructed out of 4000 billion bricks and consuming 1 terabyte of data. The only problem is that it wasn't protected from digital terrorists who thought it would be funny to bomb the capital and plant American propaganda all of the country.

When the original map was posted, it was so popular that the agency had to activate some extra servers to deal with the map's popularity. The agency asked users be polite and disabled the use of dynamite to help protect the map. However, enterprising users discovered that dynamite still worked if it was inside a minecart. Not long after this discovery, a group of users started setting off these bomb in various Denmark towns, and then built American tanks and flags on top of the debris. You can see the damage done to Copenhagen in the screen above.

"We consider that as a nature of playing Minecraft – elements are broken down and new are being created," Danish GeoData Agency spokesman Chris Hammeken told The Register. "Therefore we will not reboot the demonstration of Denmark in Minecraft. But occasionally we will rebuild minor areas if buildings are removed and nothing new is being created."

Our Take
This is sad. Almost every kid knows what it's like to build an elaborate Lego model and then have some bigger kid come by and kick it down. This is the case of a few bad apples ruining something special and giving other gamers (and Americans) a bad name. Let's hope this doesn't cause the country of Denmark to go to war with the U.S. and bomb a digital version of the White House.
