Mortal Kombat 9 Escapes GameSpy Fatality

by Mike Futter on May 10, 2014 at 03:51 AM

With GameSpy Technologies (owned by Glu) going offline later this month, a number of games with large player bases have been affected. Some of those titles will be going offline forever. Some will carry on.

The latest Mortal Kombat game is one of the survivors. NetherRealm founder and creative director Ed Boon confirmed that the title will stay online via Twitter earlier this week.

That’s probably the best decision, since Boon is in the middle of teasing something via a Twitter-based countdown. We caught up with Boon yesterday as he worked to confound us and fans.

Our Take
The GameSpy Technologies closure is having far-reaching impact on the industry and costing developers and publishers money, good will, or both. I suspect that Glu’s name has been cursed in many an office over the past few months.
