Nintendo To Put Characters To Work In New Licensing Deals

by Matt Helgeson on May 08, 2014 at 02:50 PM

Mario, Luigi, Link, and the gang already hold down Nintendo's video games, but now the company plans to put them to work with host of new licensing deals.

Nintendo head Satoru Iwata said in a recent call to investors, "We are not at a stage where we can share the specifics with you today, but we are seeing possibilities in licensing character IP in areas Nintendo has never worked before. I expect to be able to discuss some of the details before the end of this calendar year."

These licensing deals will likely include Nintendo characters likenesses on merchandise and other consumer products.

Our Take
In comparison to companies like Disney and Pixar, Nintendo has never fully leveraged the merchandising potential of its franchises and characters. Given the company's current losses, it's probably a wise business decision.
