Hopes Of Dying Light In 2014 Flicker Out As Title Is Delayed

by Mike Futter on May 08, 2014 at 05:33 AM

In late March, it was rumored that Dying Light was going to miss its 2014 release window. At that time, developer Techland denied to us that the game would be late. Despite that, the title won’t be making it before the new year.

A press release from the developer states that the game will now be released in February 2015. Platform plans remain the same, with the title releasing on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC.

“The new date ensures that we can fully realize our vision of an innovative open world game,” the statement from Techland reads. “We won’t need to make compromises or trade-offs on any of the five platforms we’re working on. For you, it means an outstanding, original game that makes the wait more than worthwhile.”

Techland will have the game at E3, and it says that more details will be available about the game at that time. For more, you can read our most recent preview.

We've inquired about what has happened since late March to cause such a dramatic change in confidence. We'll update should we receive a response.

Our Take
Given that just over a month ago, the developer was certain (and on the record) that the title would be released in 2014, I’d be concerned about the trajectory of the title. Something clearly stumbled in the development process. Delays make for better games, but a dramatic shift like this in such a short time isn’t heartening.
