Ed Boon Appears To Be Cleverly Counting Down To Something

by Mike Futter on May 06, 2014 at 05:13 AM

The man behind Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us is prolific on Twitter, responding to fan comments and sharing thoughts about the gaming industry. Lately though, he’s been slyly counting down to something.

IGN spotted Boon’s cleverly hidden countdown, which began two days ago and ends on Monday, June 2 (just a week before E3). His studio, NetherRealm, is behind 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot and 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Mortal Kombat was announced a few days before E3 2010. Injustice: Gods Among Us was announced right before E3 2012 and was playable behind closed doors at that year’s show.

It wouldn’t be surprising for WB and NetherRealm to have some surprises in store as we approach E3, but whether that’s a fighting game or something else (like the long anticipated return of Shaolin Monks), we don’t know. If we’re interpreting this countdown correctly, we should know in less than a month.

What we do know right now is that actor Kiefer Sutherland (24, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes) has confirmed his participation in a Mortal Kombat project.

Update: And here's today's piece of the countdown:

Our Take
I’ve been a big fan of NetherRealm’s work, especially recently. I’m excited to find out what this countdown might lead to.
