Lionsgate Announces Plans To Expand From Film Into Games

by Mike Futter on May 01, 2014 at 03:51 AM

Lionsgate, the movie and television distribution house responsible for The Hunger Games and Divergent, has announced a move into the video game industry. The company has tapped Nerdist co-founder and former CEO Peter Levin to lead the initiative.

Lionsgate’s expansion from film into games has been done by others with varying success. Warner Bros. has built a thriving interactive business with numerous successful Lego titles, the Batman: Arkham series, and NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat and Injustice fighting games.

Disney, on the other hand, has struggled in the digital landscape. The company found success with its toys-meets-digital title Disney Infinity in 2013, and will expand that with a new Marvel title in that universe this fall. Unfortunately, other aspects of the interactive business haven’t fared so well, with major layoffs taking place earlier this year.

Lionsgate’s film library also includes the Twilight and The Expendables franchises, but through acquisitions also includes Reservoir Dogs, Young Guns, and Total Recall. Levin will report to Lionsgate chief financial officer Jimmy Barge and CEO Jon Feltheimer.

Our Take
Levin built up a respectable online business with The Nerdist, and with it a connection to geek culture and gaming. Provided he takes the lessons from others that have moved from film into games, Lionsgate could well be a publisher to keep an eye on.
