Defiance Going Free-To-Play

by Daniel Tack on May 01, 2014 at 06:05 AM

Trion World’s MMO shooter Defiance will be going free to play on June 4th on PC. The target date for PS3 is July 15, with Xbox 360’s date currently unknown. The free-to-play model will be similar to Rift (and the upcoming ArcheAge), with no gated content but many available convenience items and cosmetics for purchase. All new and existing box copy owners will receive boosts, character shots, keys, and currency.

Trick Dempsey, creative lead on Defiance, states that the top tier or highly prized loot won’t be available via the cash shop.

“The best stuff in the game will still only be available by earning them through encounters and achievement,” Dempsey says.

The free-to-play MMORPG environment presents players with a deluge of options these days, so why check out Defiance? “Defiance is the only massively cooperative third-person shooter. It is entirely unique in its genre and experience,” Dempsey says.” It’s like Halo and Red Dead Redemption had a baby, and this baby decided that we were going to fight space aliens in San Francisco. And there’s no one else out there offering that experience.”
