FCC Chairman To Address Congress On Net Neutrality

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will testify before the House Commerce Subcommittee on Communications on May 20. During his time on Capitol Hill, Wheeler is expected to address, among other things, net neutrality.

Late last week, we shared a report on proposed changes that would gut the concept of an open internet. The new rules, which might masquerade under the name “net neutrality” would be anything but.

They would enable service providers to charge content creators based on consumption on a case-by-case basis. They would also enable ISPs to promote their own content with faster speeds while material from their competitors could be throttled down.

In the case of the pending Comcast/Time Warner merger, this could prove exceedingly troublesome. For more, check out an extensive rundown of how net neutrality and increasing prevalence of data caps could increase the cost of gaming.

Our Take
There is less than a month to make your voice heard before Wheeler speaks before Congress. If you are interested in an open internet, contact the FCC and speak up.
