Xbox One Arrives In Japan, 25 Other Countries In September
Microsoft has put a date on the Japanese release of the Xbox One. Gamers in the land of the rising sun will have the opportunity to bring home the console on September 4, nearly 10 months after it debuted.
In addition to the release date announcement, Microsoft lists 41 titles that are confirmed for the console in Japan. These include games currently available in the existing 13 Xbox One territories, near releases like Wolfenstein: The New Order and Watch Dogs, and some titles further down the line.
Included are Halo on Xbox One (a tentative title), The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Kingdom Hearts III, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, and Dying Light. No dates are provided, but we know some of these titles, like Kingdom Hearts III, might leave fans waiting a while.
48 companies are confirmed to be working on titles that will be released in Japan. No price for the Japanese market has been revealed.
Japan is just one of 26 new markets Microsoft will release the system in this September.
Microsoft recently announced it has sold in (to retailers, not to consumers) over 5 million Xbox One units worldwide.
Our Take
Getting the consoles into more territories is absolutely critical for Microsoft, as the competition is currently lopsided. Tuning Kinect for all of the different languages can’t be a small task. Microsoft sees the camera as part of the future, and there is benefit in having a 100 percent install base, but if it’s causing a delay in launch in more territories, it’s also a liability.
