Naughty Dog Lead Artist Nate Wells Joins The Unfinished Swan Developer

by Mike Futter on Apr 21, 2014 at 05:40 AM

Nate Wells, lead artist on The Last of Us, has left Naughty Dog. Wells confirmed via Twitter that he joined The Unfinished Swan developer Giant Sparrow earlier this month.

Giant Sparrow is currently working on a project codenamed “Edith Finch.” It was first revealed in March 2013, and the studio says it is not a sequel to The Unfinished Swan, but will provide a similar experience.

Prior to his work on Game Informer’s 2013 Game of the Year, The Last of Us, Wells worked for 13 years at Irrational Games. Wells’ departure is the third notable one from Naughty Dog recently.

Uncharted creative director and writer Amy Hennig departed the studio in March, reportedly due to internal strife. She has since taken the creative lead on Visceral Games’ Star Wars project

Justin Richmond, director on Uncharted 4, also left the studio recently. Richmond has since joined Riot Games.

Correction: The headline and story originally listed Wells' title as "art director." We have corrected both to reflect his title of "lead artist." Game Informer apologizes for the error.

Our Take
There are a lot of eyes on Naughty Dog right now after the departure of high profile individuals. Anticipation is high for the next Uncharted title, especially with E3 right around the corner. Whether that game will make it for 2014 though is yet to be revealed.
