Assassin’s Creed Reaches 73 Million Copies Sold Across Franchise

by Mike Futter on Apr 21, 2014 at 03:32 AM

Ubisoft has updated its corporate “facts and figures” page, providing a new look at franchises and organizational details. The company now employs over 9,200 people at 29 studios in 19 countries.

Of those employees, 7,800 work on production, with the remaining 1,400 split across business divisions. Assassin’s Creed tops the publisher’s list of best-selling franchises with 73 million copies sold across titles. Assassin's Creed Unity has been announced for this year on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Just Dance comes in a distant second at 48 million, followed by Splinter Cell (30 million), Rainbow Six (26 million), and Ghost Recon (25 million). The bottom of the list provided (which is not inclusive), lists Your Shape on the Kinect and Wii U, at 3 million.

Ubisoft will report its full-year earnings on May 15, 2014, during which company executives will also give an outlook for the coming year. Ubisoft's third quarter report reflected a downturn, in part due to the delays of Watch Dogs and The Crew to the next fiscal year.

Our Take
If you were wondering why Assassin’s Creed comes out every year (and may even get two games in 2014), you need only look at the numbers. I am looking forward to the earnings call next month, if only because we should get a better idea of whether Ubisoft thinks The Division will still make it for calendar year 2014. I strongly suspect it will be delayed into 2015, but possibly not outside Ubisoft’s current fiscal year.
