You're Invited To Witness (Potential) History At E.T. Landfill Excavation
A documentary crew is excavating the rumored final resting place of millions of unsold E.T. game cartridges, and you're invited to watch it happen.
The invite comes days after securing the final permission needed to dig up the Alamogordo landfill in New Mexico. The excavation will take place April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Pacific at the Alamogordo landfill, located at 4276 Highway 54 S., Alamogordo, NM 88310.
The site is being dug up as part of a documentary from Fuel Entertainment that's part of an upcoming series from Microsoft.
Our Take
Even if the dig doesn't turn up a single copy of the game, I think this urban legend is too good to die. The idea of a game selling so poorly that it had to be buried next to diapers and other garbage is such a great image, even if it's not provably true. I will say that anyone who thinks it's the worst game on the Atari 2600 is either lying or they've never played Freeway or its horrible Pac-Man port.
