Sony Online Entertainment boss John Smedley has been teasing a new game for months now. In January, during an “ask me anything” session on Reddit, he promised that the new title would make Star Wars Galaxies fans happy.

"SWG PLAYERS - OUR NEXT GAME (not announced yet) IS DEDICATED TO YOU," he wrote. "Once we launch it... you can come home now."

With the Star Wars license in EA’s hands (and Star Wars: The Old Republic still in full swing), it’s clear that this isn’t a Star Wars Galaxies reboot. That title was shut down in 2011 after launching in 2003.

We’ll be watching along with you tonight at 5 p.m. Pacific / 8 p.m. Eastern as Smedley appears on Game Talk Live, a daily Twitch news show.

Our Take
My concern with grandiose statements like the one Smedley made in January is that player expectation tends to exceed reality. SOE has a history of delivering on ambitious promises, though (see: Planetside 2, Landmark). We’ll be watching this one with interest.
