Final Fantasy XIV PS4 Beta Moves Into Next Phase

by Jeff Cork on Apr 04, 2014 at 04:03 AM

From now until Monday, the PlayStation 4 version of Square's Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will enter phase two of its beta. Phase two uses the MMORPG's live servers, meaning that players on Sony's new console will be able to play with people who are on PC and PS3.

PlayStation 4 owners interested in checking things out can get started right away, at no cost. Would-be adventurers first need to visit the PlayStation Store and download Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Beta Version), log in or create a Square Enix account, and then they're set. The beta will continue from now until 1 a.m. Pacific on Monday.

Once the beta is over, PS4 players will be able to play the game again when it goes live Monday, April 14. People who preordered the game will have early access to it, starting the 11th. Either way, characters created over this weekend will carry over to the final game, in addition to their progress.

Our Take
This may be a beta, but it's also an excellent way to check out the game if you've been pondering a subscription. Joe and Ben Hanson have both spent some time with it, and I've been curious about it as well. I guess I don't have any excuses not to dive in for at least a little while over the weekend.
