Chiptune Documentary Sequence Shows The Animated Life Of A Game Boy

by Matt Helgeson on Apr 02, 2014 at 09:00 AM

The opening sequence to Europe in 8 Bits, an upcoming documentary on the European chiptune scene, shows us the life, death, and rebirth of an original Game Boy.

It's a great sequence, which depicts an original Game Boy going from factory to home to a second life as a piece of musical equipment.

Europe in 8 Bits is a documentary that will depict the roots and rapid growth of the "chiptune" musical movement in Europe, in which musicians repurpose old console and handheld game systems as electronic instruments, often using them to create music inspired by 8- and 16-game soundtracks.

Below is the film's opening sequence and a more general trailer for the film.

Our Take:
The opening sequence is nicely done, and I'm always happy to see documentarians who turn their attention to aspects of video games and the larger creative culture around them.
