Nintendo "Looking At" Unity On 3DS

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 23, 2014 at 10:14 AM

In 2012, Nintendo announced a partnership making Unity development easier on Wii U. Nintendo is apparently also looking at bringing the popular engine to 3DS.

Siliconera spoke with senior manager of marketing for Nintendo Damon Baker at GDC, and asked him about the possibility of bringing a similar program Unity and Wii U program to 3DS. With the current Wii U program,  Wii U development kits come included with the Wii U version of Unity. When asked about the possibility of 3DS and Unity Baker said, “We’ve had those discussions and we are definitely looking at that.”

Baker said that the priority was to get everything related to Unity straightened out for Wii U first, and now it is ready to look at its other platforms and maybe even bring in other middleware engines.

Our Take
It's far from a confirmation that Unity is coming to 3DS, but at least Nintendo is thinking about it. Unity is one of the most popular game development engines, so bringing it over to 3DS would open it to a huge collection of developers, and a huge collection of games. It's something I certainly would like to see happen in the future.
