Google Play Update To Allow Cross-Platform Multiplayer With iOS

by Matt Helgeson on Mar 18, 2014 at 05:45 AM

A new update to Google Play game services will make it easier for developers to create games that support multi-platform mobile multiplayer.

Google Play's back-end tools have received an update that allows developers to manage leader boards and achievements across platforms, as well as support multiplayer with iOS. In addition, the Android plug-in for the popular Unity engine makes it possible for mobile developers to create cross-platform Android/iOS multiplayer.

Our Take:
Could mobile gaming's civil war finally be cooling? Not likely, but these new tools are a great step for Google, which -- despite its massive market share -- still hasn't become the leading mobile gaming platform. There will still be challenges -- the myriad of Android devices, specs, and carrier firmware makes the platform more difficult than Apple's controlled system. Still, this is a win for gamers.
