Inafune Gives Feedback, Comcept Wants Help In Latest Mighty No. 9 Update

by Jeff Cork on Mar 12, 2014 at 04:50 AM

Development on Mighty No. 9 is cruising along, according to an update from developer Comcept. The studio unveiled concept art from a new level and revealed what kind of feedback creator Keiji Inafune is giving the game after getting hands-on time with it. Comcept is seeking creative help from Kickstarter backers, too.

According to the Mighty No. 9 blog, Inafune still isn't pleased with the game's dashing mechanic or the animation for the backward jump. We expect that the team wouldn't be exposing these kinds of vulnerabilities if they weren't going to dedicate themselves to addressing those concerns.

They also showed concept art from a level that features occasional power outages. Our hero, Beck, will have to be particularly careful when the screen turns dark.

Finally, the Mighty No. 9 team wants help from its Kickstarter supporters in coming up with the text that appears at the beginning of each stage when Beck appears on the screen. He teleports into the action with the placeholder text of "stage" appearing before an equally temporary "start" pops up on screen. It's not particularly inspiring. If you backed the project and think you can do better, post your suggestions here.

Our Take
Game development is often seen as an arcane art, that magically happens in a void. It's great to see updates like these – small as they might be – that show the kind of nit-picky decisions and details that come up during playtesting. This update is obviously less about what it looks like when Beck jumps backward than it is about people caring about it in the first place.
