PlayStation 3 Box Design Undergoing Change

by Kyle Hilliard on Mar 09, 2014 at 12:48 PM

In an effort to make the boxes for PlayStation 3 games line up aesthetically with the boxes for PlayStation 4 and Vita games, Sony is changing the way they look.

IGN noticed the change has already been put in motion when the box art for the upcoming PlayStation 3 game Deception IV had a header similar to a PlayStation 4 game. Sony confirmed to IGN that the box style is being changed to create a consistent look with the one established by PlayStation 4 and Vita titles.

This marks the third time Sony has changed the box design and header style for PlayStation 3 games. You can see the previous styles on the spines of the games in the image above.

Our Take
I like the idea of having a consistent look for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Vita games, but I hate that my collection of PlayStation 3 games will move even further away from having a consistent look. There's also the potential for consumer confusion. A PlayStation 4 owner could easily mistake a new PlayStation 3 title for a PlayStation 4 game, and be disappointed when they get home. That being said, I think the blue header looks nice.
