BioWare Has Had Internal Discussions On Upgraded, New-Gen Mass Effect Trilogy

by Mike Futter on Mar 03, 2014 at 03:44 AM

It might have taken publishers a few years to spin up the HD Collection motors, we may start seeing more of the new-gen equivalents earlier in the console life cycle. The success of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition has touched off discussions about other games that might do well with a new coat of paint.

The latest buzz comes from BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn, responding to a question about an upgraded Mass Effect trilogy for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition was only available for approximately two of the five weeks of the NPD January reporting month and placed 10th on the sales chart. The NPD numbers do not account for digital sales, available on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

We don’t yet know specific sales numbers, but the information we do have suggests that the “definitive” re-release performed well. If reality matches the data we have access to, there are reasons why publishers would invest in upgrades for new-generation hardware.

BioWare is currently working on the next Mass Effect title. According to recent details, the game is already in an internal, playable state.

Our Take
For years, gamers have criticized Nintendo for repackaging its games for new platforms. At the same time, the earliest HD Collections on other platforms sold well enough to cause an avalanche in the category. If the convenience and/or upgraded graphics bump achieved by purchasing a new version is worth it to you, go for it. If not, don’t buy it. Either way, the trend is likely here to stay.
