Sony Sells 322,000 PS4s In Japan Release’s First Two Days
The PlayStation 4 is finally out in Japan, bringing the console to Sony’s home turf. Reports indicate that uptake in that country is approximately 322,000 units after just two days.
For comparison, 1 million PS4s were sold across 32 territories in the first day, with a total of approximately 5.3 million sold worldwide through January. The Famitsu report detailing the Japanese sales also notes that Sony sold just over 88,000 in the first two days of the PlayStation 3 launch.
The PlayStation 4 is available at two different price points in Japan. A standalone console retails for ¥39,980 ($390) and a bundle with the PlayStation camera is ¥43,980 ($430). Those purchasing at launch were also given a free copy of Knack.
Our Take
These are strong numbers for Sony, and it wouldn’t surprise me if we learn of sales topping 7 million at some point in March. Given the relative weakness of the Xbox One in Japan, along with an unknown release date and price, Sony was able to take its time to let the software library flourish a bit. There was simply no need to rush to market, even though it meant coming out later at home.
