New Assassin's Creed Game Won't Take Place In Japan
Ubisoft's assassins sneak into guarded fortresses, drop down on their enemies, and silence them with their blades; they're practically ninjas. Even so, the next Assassin's Creed game won't take place in the Land of the Rising Sun.
In a recent interview with Adweek, Ubisoft's managing director Jade Raymond says that the next installment of the game is set in her favorite historical age, but dismissed rumors that it takes place in Feudal Japan.
“When we’re building a franchise, we’re thinking of a whole universe and how we’re developing a meta-story that could live on for many years in games and TV,” Raymond says. “If the story has nowhere to go, then you end up with the video game equivalent of The Matrix 2 or something where it’s never going to be quite as genius.”
The series has dropped in on the Crusades, the Renaissance, American Revolution, and a pirate-filled Caribbean. We'll just have to wait and see when the next game is set. But we can still dream. some people think that Japan would make a bad setting for the series, but that doesn't mean that a Japanese Assassin's Creed is out of the question.
Our Take
This is a little disappointing, but not surprising. Since the Assassin's Creed series first released, I've been dreaming of an entry that took place in Feudal Japan. At the same time, everyone is expecting that setting, and the franchise usually picks less visited settings for the series, so maybe that's for the best.
