Journey Composer Did It All On A Keyboard From His Childhood

by Cameron Koch on Feb 24, 2014 at 10:38 AM

Last year, composer Austin Wintory’s soundtrack for Journey became the first full video game soundtrack to ever be nominated for a Grammy. It might also surprise you that instead of using a piece of high-end hardware, he composed the entire score on a $50 Casio 44-Key keyboard that he’s had since childhood.

“I did almost everything in my whole career on that because I had it since I was a kid. It had special significance to me,” Wintory says about composing on a keyboard many would consider to little more than a toy.

After Journey’s monumental success – in no small part because of his music – the keyboard still sits in his studio. For more, you can check out the full interview here.

Our Take
Journey's soundtrack was more than worthy of a Grammy nomination, and it is inspiring to learn that the composer did it all with less than optimal equipment that held special significance for him. It just goes to show that you don't have to have the latest or greatest equipment to achieve great things.
