Lightning May Return As A Guest In Future Final Fantasy Titles

by Kyle Hilliard on Feb 15, 2014 at 09:55 AM

Lightning's story comes to an end in the recently released Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, but director Motomu Toriyama says this probably isn't the last we'll see of her.

Speaking with Siliconera in Singapore where Toriyama was promoting the release of Lightning Returns, he said it is likely that she will appear again in the future because of her popularity.

For Lightning, her story ends here in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, as this game is meant as a finale to this series. But we know that Lightning is an extremely popular character, even when compared to other Final Fantasy characters.

So there is a possibility that Lightning would appear in other future Final Fantasy titles, not as a protagonist, but as a guest character.

You can head to Siliconera for the full interview where Toriyama talks ambiguously about Lightning Returns' ending (watch out for possible spoilers), and remarks on the game's mixed reviews. For our own review of Lightning Returns, head here.

Our Take
I'm not surprised to hear that Lightning could to appear in future Final Fantasy and Square Enix games, but I am surprised to hear how popular she is. According to Toriyama, she is more popular than other Final Fantasy characters. I'm curious if that is based on his general perception, or if Square Enix has some kind of survey data showing off the game's most popular characters. What do you think of Lighting? Is she one of your favorite Final Fantasy characters?
