More Than Half Of PlayStation 4 Owners Have PlayStation Plus
Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has shared new details about the attach rate for PlayStation Plus with PlayStation 4 owners. If you own Sony’s new console, there’s a better than coin-flip chance you also pay for the company’s subscription service.
The news comes by way of Sony’s third quarter earnings call, during which the company projected $1.1 billion in losses for the current fiscal year despite profit in the games division. “I’m going to just add a little more color by saying that all the 4.2 million PS4s that have already moved into the hands of consumers, more than half of the people that have now gotten their hands with the PS4 have actually signed up for PS Plus service, which bodes very well for us as well,” Hirai said.
Sony also announced that there are currently over 150 million registered PlayStation Network accounts. These are free, and this number does not correlate to the number of paid PlayStation Plus memberships, though.
PlayStation Plus offers access to the Instant Game Collection, which includes at least one new title each week (accessible as long as the user continues to pay for a subscription). On PlayStation 4, the service is required for online multiplayer.

Our Take
What Sony hasn’t made clear is how many new members are attributed to the PlayStation 4’s launch. For instance, I have had PlayStation Plus since the Instant Game Collection was announced, and I am counted among those that both own a PlayStation 4 and subscribe to the service. Sony says there’s an uptick in subscriptions (which makes sense), but I’d be interested in seeing how many new PlayStation owners have signed up.
