The lights are on
The DLC revolution is synonymous with the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 era. As publishers looked to expansions of varying sizes, prices, and values to elongate player experiences (and expand the revenue), someone remembered one of the first rules of economics. Money now is more valuable than money later.
And so, the season pass was born. L.A. Noire and Mortal Kombat were two of the first games to bundle unannounced downloadable content for gamers to purchase at launch. These leaps of faith were largely rewarded (depending on how you feel about Freddy Krueger).
Since then, season passes have taken different shapes, with varying degrees of success. Some have delivered on-time and as promised. Others have taken a little longer to make good. And, with season passes, even if you stop playing, the publisher already has your money.
Do you buy season passes? If so, how has your attitude toward them changed since they were first introduced in 2011? Let us know in the comments.
No. I bought a few, then games like BL2 started dropping DLC that wasn't covered under the season pass and it got hard to keep track of what was what.
The only season passes I've ever bought were for Telltale games and Borderlands 2. I am tempted to get another for Bioshock Infinite, other wise, I think it depends on the game. BL2 made sense since I knew there were going to be 4 DLC packs coming, but for some other games, its more I don't think I want certain DLC over others. (i.e. I only want Left Behind DLC over the MP DLC in The Last of Us.)
So for me it depends greatly on the game and planned DLC.
It's the exception. Last one I bought was for the PC version of The Wolf Among us after episode 1 was released for free on Xbox Live and I got annoyed by the loading times. I can't remember if I ever bought one before that.
First season pass I bought was for Gears of War 3 and I was extremely happy with it. RAAM's Shadow alone was worth $20, plus there was a ton of maps released for it as well. Gears of War: Judgment was the next season pass I bought and I was very disappointed. The game was extremely mediocre to begin with, but it's Gears, and I love Gears… so I bought it. I think it had a total of like 4 multiplayer maps that were added and a few more for Overrun/Survival which no one plays.
I'll probably pick up the Bioshock Infinite season pass too, as I want to play the 2 Buried at Sea DLC'S for Bioshock Infinite, and it's cheaper to buy the season pass than it is to buy them separately.
In the future it'd be nice to have everything listed that will be in the season pass so we can make an informed decision.
Never did, never will. I want all the content that I pay for, available upon payment. My backlog is so big, I don't mind waiting six months or more for a GOTY edition. In fact I just bought the Batman Arkham Asylum/Arkham City Dual Pack for PS3, on disc with all possible content for both games, for $20.
So why pay a whole lot upfront for "probably" some content later, unless the game is an MMO where the whole point of the game is to capitalize on the "now" excitement factor of everyone playing at launch?
Really back and forth with them. Especially considering they are pretty expensive and have now gone up in price like TLOU was 20$ and I'm just now about to get some noteworthy DLC for that (I'm not including all the maps and stuff, I bought the game for its single player, even though the MP isn't bad by any means) and ac black flag season pass is 30$. I've gotten to the point that I wait on the dlc, if I like it, I buy the season pass that way I don't have to purchase it all. Like I wish mass effect 3 had one, I definitely would've purchased one there. But for games like ac I won't. It goes really back an forth. All in all, guess it just depends on the game.
I hate to say this, but I rarely buy any DLC. The only game I regularly purchase DLC for is Halo. Even though I have played (and loved) every single COD to date, I have only purchased 2 map packs...and that was because the were discounted. I hate to think that I have missed out on some great DLC, such as the things for Bioshock, Assassins Creed and so on, but after these initial investments of money and time, I rarely get the urge to purchase the additional stuff. That being said, I'm all for GOY editions. I purchased the GOY editions for both Fallout 3 and Skyrim. In both cases, the GOY editions were cheaper than the initial game cost (59.99), not even taking into consideration the 10-60 additional dollars I would have spent on the DLC. I'm not opposed to it, I just don't ever get around to it.
I buy the ones I want. Like for the Walking Dead and Bioshock Infinite. I trust the developer of these games, and am fully aware they will deliver great content for the reduced price. It's not a trend of mine, but I am open to the idea.
No I have never bought a season pass ever.
gave up on season passes after I purchased the Call Of Duty one.. didn't even play half the maps, plus for the amount of money you spend on the pass you can go out and buy another game.
Only for The Walking Dead Series
