Ubisoft To Release Standalone Assassin’s Creed: Freedom Cry

by Mike Futter on Feb 05, 2014 at 07:00 AM

Ubisoft is taking an interesting approach to its Assassin’s Creed IV expansion, Freedom Cry. As you might recall, the expansion puts Edward Kenway’s first mate, Adewale, in the spotlight.

During the adventure, Adewale is shipwrecked in Haiti, where vicious slave-trade plagues the local population. The package will be available for $14.99 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on February 18 and PC on February 25. If you'd rather pick up Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and play it as DLC, it will run you $10.

Curious about whether Freedom Cry is worth your time if you’ve not yet played Assassin’s Creed? Check out our impressions

Our Take
Ubisoft has been making some smart plays with its games. Packaging DLC as a standalone game follows the mini-AAA movement started by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Creative bundling like this offers a low-price entry (or return) to the Assassin's Creed series for those that haven't started or have strayed.
