‘Father Of The PlayStation’ Ken Kutaragi To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award
At the upcoming Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this March, former Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi will be given a lifetime achievement award. Many associate Kutaragi with the PlayStation brand, but his earliest work was with Nintendo. Kutaragi developed the sound chip for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
At Sony, Kutaragi lead the development of the first PlayStation console, which led him on a path to the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, deputy executive president of the company, and then, in 2007, honorary chairman. Kutaragi’s award will be presented by PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny.
The Game Developers Choice Awards will be hosted by Respawn Entertainment community manager Abbie Heppe. That event, which will include the lifetime achievement award, will be held on Wednesday March 19 at 6:30 pm Pacific.
Past lifetime achievement award winners include Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, founders of BioWare; game designers Warren Spector and Peter Molyneux; pillar of Nintendo game development Shigeru Miyamoto and others. The PlayStation changed the landscape of gaming culture and was the first system to break through 100 million unit barrier. The Game Developers Conference is a chance to celebrate the medium and those that have made it what it is today, and there is no doubt that Ken Kutaragi helped shape that.. I’m looking forward to hearing Kutaragi’s thoughts about the ever-changing landscape of the industry.
