Riot: League Of Legends Averages 27 Million Players Per Day

As the ability to sell out the Staples Center in Los Angeles for its championship finals demonstrated, League of Legends is one of the most popular competitive games in the world. Now, Riot has revealed just how popular its game has become.

Today on its website, Riot revealed that its free-to-play MOBA averages 27 million players per day. The surge is remarkable when you consider the game averaged 12 million players per day in October 2012. When you look at the monthly average, the number of League of Legend players jumps to 67 million.

The popularity is staggering in comparison to the most popular competitive multiplayer series on consoles, Call of Duty. At its peak, the second-to-last entry in the series, Modern Warfare 3, averaged 3.3 million players per day on Xbox Live. Even if you doubled that number to account for the PlayStation 3, the number falls drastically short of League of Legends.

Our Take
When you see gaudy numbers like these, it's no surprise that major publishers are taking measures to move into the popular arena battle space and toying with free-to-play economic models. League of Legends and Dota 2 are worldwide phenomena that show no signs of slowing down.
