Hitman Devs Reveal First Info On New Game

There's been some confusion about the fate of the Hitman series, and developer IO Interactive has released a statement that clears a few things up. In the open letter to fans, the studio explains that they're hard at work on the next AAA installment and provided some tantalizing details about the game.

As the letter states, the still-unnamed game will be running on the Glacier 2 engine, the same engine as Hitman: Absolution. IO Interactive says the game will feature the largest environments yet, which will support checkpoint-free, sandbox-style gameplay. The lack of checkpoints could be a relief for players who grew frustrated with some of the hairy situations checkpoint respawns could create in previous games.

Contracts mode is also returning, allowing players to build their own assassination scenarios and challenge their friends – or the world – to beat their scores.

In addition to that, IO says they're getting rid of Agent 47's "magic pockets." In other words, you won't be able to carry around a seemingly unlimited supply of gear when you're hunting down your prey. Considering that the series has always put such an emphasis on being resourceful in the field and taking advantage of your surroundings, it's not likely to make or break this new game.

We'll have more information on the game in the coming months.

Our Take
I've enjoyed the series since I played the first game, and I'm always eager to jump into Agent 47's skin. The games have provided players with sandbox-style choices, though the box was admittedly small, and I'm eager to see what these larger worlds mean to the game.
